Working with English Language Learners (Unit 2): Effective Classroom Strategies for Teaching ELs

In Unit 2 of Working with English Language Learners, we’ll expand on an idea we introduced in Unit 1: that classrooms can provide very good context for language learning, and that with some thought, ELs can learn language and content at the same time. In this module, we will introduce an approach called “Content-Based Language Teaching,” which is a way to think specifically about integrating language and content in classrooms. The other modules in this unit will discuss making content comprehensible, assessing and incorporating background knowledge, the importance of focusing specifically on academic language, and what to do about learners’ errors.
