Working with English Language Learners (Unit 1): Fundamentals of Teaching ELs

In Unit 1 of Working with English Language Learners, you’ll learn strategies and techniques for working effectively with students who do not speak English at home, and who are in classes where the language of instruction is English. You’ll gain an understanding of what it means to be an English language learner and a brief overview of the legal and policy requirements that govern English language learners.

We’ll also explore language as a concept, including the language acquisition process and how it affects content instruction. Finally, we’ll explore comprehensible input—the key building block for language acquisition—and language production.
